We have all seen the pictures of the lady dressed in 1800’s clothing holding her umbrella as her special someone helps her into a small rowboat for an afternoon of rowing on the lake. The Victorian interior design concept is extremely popular especially in the New England states of the United States and there are several key elements involved with Victorian interior design that you will need to stick with if you want the true Victorian feel.

History

The Victorian era was started in England and it is usually attached to the reign of Queen Victoria, hence the name Victorian, that was from 1837 to 1901. Queen Victoria had the longest rule in the history of British monarchs and the period of her rule is remembered so fondly because not only was it a time of unmatched peace in England but it was also a time of exciting innovation as the industrial revolution was beginning and fortunes were being made.

The general positive feeling of the period is something that people look at in a very positive light and even those people that never lived during that period find joy and happiness in images from that period. The architecture of the day was grand and Victorian interior design was very busy and could almost be considered clutter today. But it lives on and is preferred by people all over the world.

Stick It on Your Wall

One of the hallmarks of Victorian interior design was wallpaper. Wallpaper has been around since the Roman Empire but it was developed into the form we know now right around the Victorian period. People of means would use wallpaper as a statement that indicated that they could afford to paper their walls in these beautiful colors.

From this notion of wallpaper being a status symbol came the idea that Victorian interior design must include wallpaper. If you are going to start redecorating your home to be in the Victorian interior design motif then you will be hanging wallpaper. If you are not a big fan of wallpaper then you will probably not enjoy a true Victorian interior design concept and you may want to consider collecting Victorian era furniture.

The floors for Victorian interior design are usually well kept, and beautiful, hard wood floors with decorative throw rugs on them. Wall to wall carpeting is not very Victorian and if you have wall to wall carpeting then changing them to hard wood floors should be the first order of business. Circular picture frames, for some reason, are also associated with the Victorian look although the idea of circular picture frames has been around for centuries. All in all a Victorian look is about having means in the 1800’s and while it can be a very cluttered theme, it can also be very beautiful.

tropical interior design

The Elements of Tropical Interior Design

Many people like to use minor elements of tropical interior design as a way to escape the pressures of the day. Some people will have tropical interior design posters at their desks at work and some even go so far as to have tropical fish at their desk. These are all attempts to get away from the stress of the day because everyone always equates tropical interior design with vacation time and a time to get away from reality.

Tropical Theme Basics

However, the tropics are more than just posters and small fishbowls filled with fish that are probably as bored as you are. The tropics are about simplicity and a mix of colors that can revitalize the soul. The tropics are about a warm breeze blowing through your hair and even the feel of sand between your toes. Yes the tropics are about relaxing but there are so many other elements to tropical interior design that people seem to leave out.

It is kind of sad to go to any bar in the United States that is trying to get a tropical interior design theme going and see how miserably they fail. Meanwhile the new tropical interior design theme restaurant down the street is doing just fine and seems to offer a more authentic tropical feel. Why is that? One of the key elements to any tropical interior design theme is warmth and light. I am not talking about the buzz of an overhead fluorescent work lamp; I mean real natural light that flows in all day long.

Then at night that light shifts to the dim but effective light of firelight from torches and bon fires. The warm breeze hits you all day long and then that cool breeze comes in at night off the ocean and then you are talking tropics. If you want to really get a tropical interior design theme going get some nice big windows installed and regulate the temperature of your building to be warm during the day and cool at night.

Using Bamboo

It really doesn’t scream tropics but for some reason using bamboo does seem to lend a tropical feel to any motif. Bamboo wall coverings, bamboo mats on the floor and even on the ceilings, or even a bamboo hardwood floor all seem to have their unique qualities that make something feel truly tropical. If you really want to help that along then get some fake palm tree leaves and then you are talking a real tropical feel. Bamboo is nice but bamboo combined with palm tree leaves and you are talking Jamaica.

It doesn’t take a lot to make people feel somewhat tropical but if you what to do it right then you need to do some of the basics. Lots of natural light during the day, dim firelight at night, and a warm breeze can make anyone feel tropical.

restaurant interior design

Some Advice for Restaurant Interior Design

Sometimes the way a building looks on the inside can completely determine the success of the business that it houses. This is extremely apparent when you consider restaurant interior design. When people come into a restaurant the first thing they notice, besides the smell of the food, is the décor inside the restaurant.

Unless you run a McDonald’s or some other fast food place, the ambiance is created by the combination of the smell of the food, the look of the restaurant, and the quality of service. The best prepared food can be made to taste terrible if the restaurant interior design is not appealing. This is where a lot of restaurants go wrong; they try and appeal to everyone when in reality they should be appealing primarily to their client base. If you appeal only to your client base then that client base will grow.

A Chinese restaurant with a restaurant interior design theme of a 1950’s diner is simply not going to work. Although it may be a great novelty for a little while it will soon wear off and the notion of an incorrect restaurant interior design can kill a restaurant. If you have a Chinese restaurant then decorate it as such and make it feel like a real Chinese restaurant.

You will need to get professional decorators in to really give it an authentic feel but once it is decorated properly then you should be able to get customers. Dining is an experience and the restaurant interior design should help add to that experience. A neutral restaurant interior design is boring and offers nothing to help add to the experience of the evening and will drive customers away.

Keep Them Separated from the Kitchen

There are too many people out there who get access to what amounts to a huge banquet hall with a kitchen and think they have a restaurant. They very well may have a restaurant but there is nothing that kills a restaurant quicker than a wide open and brightly lit room. Once again people go to restaurants for ambiance and for a feel that they cannot get in their own dining rooms and if you have some tables and chairs on a linoleum floor then you aren’t giving them anything they haven’t already seen. Separate the dining room from the reception area somehow. Maybe have a wall put in or even a curtain would do the trick.

Too many people take restaurant interior design for granted and when their restaurant fails they have no idea why. Take the time to make your restaurant an experience and you will have a better chance of watching your business grow than if you offered people nothing different than eating at home.

office interior design

Picking The Right Office Interior Design

It is vital for every professional space across the world to have the right office interior design. This is often times not looked at as important when small businesses are starting up and believe it or not, this can sometimes lead to their fall. Generally, it is only the big name companies and businesses that take a close look at office interior design. But now the small companies need to follow in their lead and start thinking about how to improve their office interior design in a way to fit their needs.

Taking action in getting some design into your office does not have to be a costly experience. There are many professional designers who would be willing to assist you in sprucing up your office without charging you an arm and a leg. These lower costing, yet highly efficient designers can be found in your local yellow pages or on the Internet. You do want to make sure though that you check their references and request to see samples of work they have done. A good designer, no matter how cheap they are, will have a portfolio for you to see.

Reasons For Office Interior Design

Have you ever walked into an office that made you feel cold, unwelcome, or not even sure you are in the right place? It is vitally important that your office gives all of its visitors a warm feeling and an appropriate setting. You want your office interior design to visually express the type of business you run as well as giving your customers a chance to feel at home. It is much easier to do business in a welcoming environment versus a cold, white walled room with no design effort. A white room with just a desk and two chairs is not a setting many people would feel comfortable in.

The best example of why the need for properly done office interior design would be mismatched themes. A doctors office would not want to look like a music store no more then a principals office would want to look like arcade at the mall. While these are extreme examples, this gives you the idea of how important the right office interior design can be.

So whether you are updating your current design, or lack there of, it is important to get a general idea of how you would want your office to look and start making phone calls. It is best to have several different designers come out because of how important it is to make sure the two of you are on the right page.

office interior design

Picking The Right Office Interior Design

It is vital for every professional space across the world to have the right office interior design. Deciding on which designs are best for you and your family can be tricky. Here are some things to consider.

The Kitchen

The kitchen is usually the hub of the home. Modern home design decisions made here will affect the rest of the house. First, you need to decide if you would like an open layout kitchen, or a closed in design. The open layout option is good if you like to entertain or talk to people in the living room while you cook or clean up. Next, decide how much natural light and how much task lighting you want in your kitchen. Track lighting and recessed lighting are a very popular modern home design that is used in kitchens. Also, decide if you would like a window above the sink, if you would like and island, a double oven, or a built-in microwave.

An important planning step is to decide where the eating will be done. Will you have a breakfast bar or breakfast nook? Will you have a formal dining room or just a kitchen table? Will you have built-in benches for maximum seating, or will you just use chairs?

The Living Room/Family Room

The living room and/or family room is where the family can gather for fun and entertainment. When planning modern home design for this room, consider if you would like a built-in entertainment center and/or book shelves. Also consider shelving made especially for any gaming systems you may have, including storage for extra controllers. You may want custom built shelves to hold collections, extra wide shelving for board games, a built-in dart board, or other features to accommodate hobbies and entertainment.

Another thing to think about is the TV placement. Do you want it mounted on the wall, in its own recessed cubby, or in an entertainment center? Also, do you want surround sound and how will it affect other parts of the modern home design? Many custom surround sound units can be put in before or during the laying of drywall so that there are no visible wires.

Windows should be carefully planned in the modern home design. Consider if you would like a bay window seat installed for a cozy reading nook, or if you want in-the-window blinds to reduce dust.

There are many things to consider when deciding on modern home design, but they can all be made with a little planning and carful thought to the needs of the whole family.

interior office design

Professional Do-It-Yourself Interior Office Design

Most people spend at least one-third of their lives in their office. It only makes sense that those offices reflect the person’s personality and needs with interior office design, and doing it yourself is easier than most realize. There are just some simple points to remember.

Rules

First, before anything else is done in the interior office design, a person should see what rules are used in their office that pertains to interior office design. Some employers will let their employees decorate as much as they want, including painting the walls, hanging pictures, and moving furniture. Some employers, though, will not let their employees do much more than put pictures on their desks, so checking these rules is important. Crossing the line should be avoided.

Layout

Next, a layout needs to be decided on in the interior office design. The arrangement of the furniture is not only vital to the look of the office, but also vital to its productivity. The computer screen should be placed where it gets the least glare throughout the day, for example. The layout of cords should also be taken into consideration. Put the electronics where their cords won’t be strung out in the middle of the floor to reduce tripping hazards. The workspace should be set up so that there is a computer area and a flat, open work area for signing paperwork and such.
Furniture should be placed so that clients or co-workers can easily talk to the person behind the desk and sit in comfort. Cabinets and filing cabinets should be put off to the side, away from where visitors will sit.

Decorate

Finally, the fun part in interior office design comes into play. One can spice up a workspace by adding colorful decorative curtains, dried or fresh flowers, pictures in nice frames, knickknacks, and other personal items. One tip to make the office look put together and not just a miss-mash of objects is to pick a unifying color and use it throughout the office. Also, don’t decorate with prints that are too wild or funky. For example, heart print and animal print usually are not professional in an office. For the best look, go with solids in one color. Storage should be taken into consideration to reduce clutter.
The most important thing to remember in self interior office design is too keep things simple and professional, without a lot of clutter. With that in mind interior office design is easy.

interior design trends

Looking at Some Current Interior Design Trends

The interior design trends used in personal and commercial interior design change frequently but they are usually cyclical. What was popular 50 years ago is making a comeback now and people push interior design trends towards nostalgic ways to try and make what was new then also new now.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t and depending on how far back you go, and how extreme you decide to get, your own personal interior design trends could potentially cause you more harm than good. So perhaps before you start tearing things down and nailing things up you should take a look at some of the current interior design trends.

Less Is More

One of the very popular interior design trends of today is to simplify one’s home and office. The idea of sleek and efficient furniture and accessories is really catching on again and people are falling back to the 1950’s Americana look to get the effect they want. Sleek couches and chairs are replacing the big comfortable easy chairs and glass tables are replacing the big and bulky coffee tables.

Designers are using textures on walls to give the feel of more space and even opening up rooms with mirrors and other interior design trends. This probably comes from the fact that many Americans prefer to economize their space rather than clutter it up and it could be that the days of big cushy furniture are coming to an end.

Back to Earth with Colors

Earth tones are becoming a popular interior design trend as more people are painting their walls and floors to match the colors they see outside. Shades of green and brown are becoming very popular and many people like to accent these earth tones with small areas of color throughout the home. This color makes the earth tones seem more basic and can also open up a room even more and give the appearance of more space.

It seems that many of the interior design trends of today center on the desire to not necessarily create more space but create the feel of more space. This is interesting because people prefer the notion of illusion over actually physically changing their homes. It is that desire to feel in control of your own domain that causes people to want to try and warp perception through color.

It is starting to look like what was once old is now new again. The concept of conservation of space with a sleek new age look that was so popular in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s seems to be making a huge comeback. The only problem to that is some of that furniture is very uncomfortable!

interior design tips

Spruce Up Your Home with Interior Design Tips

Everyone at some point has wished that they could totally redo the décor in their home but cost is always an issue. Well, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make your home look fresh and pleasing again as long as you have a few interior design tips you can follow.

Kitchen Updates

The kitchen is the heart of the home as it is the most used gathering area for family and visitors so it stands to reason that after a lot of use, it starts to look a bit worn out. With a few interior design tips that are relatively budget-friendly, you can give your kitchen a new lease on life. For example, if you have fluorescent lighting, it can make the whole space look outdated so the solution is to remove them and install something that will take warm colored light bulbs. You have plenty of options like recessed lighting, track lighting or even ceiling light drop features.

The cabinets are often the second thing that could use a bit of work and one of the interior design tips to follow is a simple coat of paint to brighten up the space. If you have beautiful wood cabinetry and don’t want to paint over it, you can always take out the middle wood panel of the cabinet door and replace it with a piece of decorative glass – either clear or frosted to add brightness to the room.

Living Areas

The family room or living room is two places which could stand a few interior design tips to freshen up the look. If you cannot afford new furniture like a new loveseat or sofa, consider slipcovers to camouflage the outdated, worn upholstery. Other interior design tips include the use of area rugs to cover a stain or worn area in the carpet or even replacing the carpet with laminate or tile flooring.

Bathroom Makeover

Bathrooms need some tender loving care too and a few interior design tips can really turn your room into a comfortable oasis. One of the first things to do is inspect your sink and tub fixtures as these often show the most wear first. Just replacing them with something shiny and new can change the whole look of the bathroom. A simple coat of paint works wonders as well but if you choose to do it, make sure that you select a paint that is formulated for the humid, steamy conditions of a bathroom.

Other Rooms

Among the interior design tips that are the most popular are those that deal with storage and organization because no one seems to have enough of them these days! Many rooms look worn and dull simply because of the clutter so one of the interior design tips you should indulge in are some storage options, whether it is colorful toy bins for the kid’s room or wicker baskets in the craft room to hold your supplies.

And let’s not forget the garage as it is often the most neglected area in the home which could stand a few interior design tips! The garage also needs storage solutions as well as peg boards for easy tool storage and even overhead racks and braces for fishing poles, canoes, bikes and a host of other items that typically clutter up a garage.

interior design software

Why Use Interior Design Software?

You sit on your couch staring at your living room walls and suddenly you get a great idea. Wouldn’t these walls look great in plaid? Oh man the wife will love it! We’re Scottish I think! I am going to go out right now and get the paint so I can surprise her when she gets home! You’re in trouble.

Flexibility in Options

But you really believe that the room would look better in plaid, you may be right. However, as we all know, there is no such thing as making your own decision on home improvements and interior design and that is why there is interior design software there to help. Interior design software comes in many different types but you want the one that is the most flexible and offers you the most freedom to not only create replicas of your rooms on your computer but also move stuff around. Decent interior design software can be a little expensive but the cost savings by avoiding divorce attorneys alone pays for it.

You can use interior design software to see how your room will look with different colors on the walls and even different colors on the furniture. It is not unusual during an interior design fit that people will change everything and that includes the color of their furniture. So why not use interior design software to see what everything will look like with an endless variety of colors and schemes.

You can match the drapes with the walls and then match the walls with the couch. The beauty of interior design software is that it allows you to try everything without the fear of making a costly mistake. You can also use interior design software to rearrange the furniture and see what configuration you want prior to asking someone to move all the furniture around several times.

Take Out That Wall

You can also use interior design software to completely remodel a room. You can see what a room would look like with part of a wall missing or with the whole wall missing. The only thing the interior design software cannot tell you is if you are looking at removing a load bearing wall; you really don’t want to do that. You can plan all you want on interior design software but before you start taking down walls you may want to get a professional contractor’s opinion just so your upstairs doesn’t become your downstairs.

Another great function of interior design software is to see what a room would look like if you changed its function. What if you wanted to turn one of your bedrooms into a library? You can use the software to see what it would all look like without moving a single real piece of furniture. Interior design projects can get expensive and the best way to avoid unnecessary expense is to plan ahead.

interior design schools

The Right Interior Design Schools

If you have always dreamed of starting your own interior design business or even if you are just understanding the potential in this field, you need to consider a lot of things before trying to look through all of the different types of interior design schools that are available out there. You first need to decide what you have to offer as someone who works in the design field. Are you already creative, artist, or do you already try redesigning the interior of homes of friends and family? Basically, do you already have the drive it takes or are you just looking for a job?

You will need to think about your personal work schedule and study habits. Are you already working a full time job that you will have to work around? If so, you will want to look for interior design schools that offer flexible class schedules including evenings and weekends. Another thing to consider is whether or not the school is close to you. Will you have to travel a long way to get there? If so, with homework and your day job, you may have a hard time balancing everything. So check for interior design schools that are a good balance in distance between where you work and where you live.

If once you start checking into the different schools, their locations, and their class schedule, you start to feel that you won’t be able to fit it all in, you may want to think outside the box. Although it is not normally the first thing that comes to mind when someone talks about different interior design schools, online schools are an excellent way to achieve your degree and begin your new career. You do want to be careful though when researching online interior design schools, as you need them to be an accredited school. If they are not, a lot of employers will look down on your educational experience.

Online Versus Brick And Mortar

As with anything in life there are many pros and cons to attending a brick a mortar school or the virtual online school. These issues are things that you should thoroughly discuss with your friends and family in order to make the right decision for you and them. There may be more people affected then just you so think about those close to you and talk everything over. Also, other people can often times make you think of things you hadn’t yet thought of.

With the brick and mortar interior design schools, you are stuck with whatever schedule you have. Set class time is set class time and you can’t change it or make it up. So, you must know that you will always make it to class in order to get the grades you need in order to graduate. Think about the transportation you will be using. If you drive, is your car in good shape or if it breaks, is there someone who can always help get you to school? Or maybe there is a bus route through your area that can help.

With online interior design schools, most of them offer much more flexibility as you can log in when it is convenient for you. You are also able to work basically whenever it is suitable for you as long as you participate as often as required and your assignments are on time. This is often a great choice for those who have too many family and work obligations to tend to but wants to further their career.

interior design school

The Need To Know About Interior Design School

So you know that you have talent and you would like to put it to good use. Of course you can always redesign your home and the home of friends and family but that thrill will soon wear off. Even if you have the eye for design, you will still need an education from an accredited interior design school in order to get the clients you need to make a living. But what exactly will you learn in an interior design school?

Within the walls of an interior design school, you will learn not only about colors and fabrics but you will gain some business knowledge that every successful designer needs. You need more then the flare of design to make you a success as you need business skills to make sure your business stays alive and well for many years to come. You must know what to charge and how to handle difficult customers. And let’s face it you will have difficult customers no matter how well you perform.

And something not thought of is that there is a lot of material to read over and learn in terms of how to use proper lighting in a home of office based on where the windows are and how many of them there are. For lighting issues, an interior design school will even cover the basics of determining if the room is going to get more room in the morning or in the evening depending on where the sun sets.

After Graduation

So finally, you have studied hard, got excellent grades and now you have the degree to prove it. You can finally begin to work either with a team of professional designers or alone as you start your own business. But what you may not know is what it is exactly that you should be expecting when starting your own business after leaving your interior design school. It can be tricky, but if it is done properly you can become a great success and enjoy your work.

The wonderful thing is that the need and desire for design services is likely to increase as people become more aware in the need for good interior design. Whether it is for an office, a shop, or for a private residence, the need for designers with an interior design school education is going to grow. This is likely to mean that in the near future there will be many more people in need of help then designers available so you many end up with your plate full.

interior designed programs

Interior Design Programs Make Decorating Easy

If you’ve ever considered getting into interior design, you may want to pick up an interior design program. Most decorating is done either on paper or on the computer screen before it’s actually put into practice. This saves money and time and it allows you to see how something’s going to actually look. Sometimes, you may think something looks good until you actually do it and see that it doesn’t look so good after all. These are the types of situations that interior design programs are perfect for. They allow you to play around with certain materials or colors so that you can see how they’ll look before you actually do it.

Very User Friendly

Most interior design programs are very user friendly. That means that you simply load the program onto your computer and in no time you’ll be up and running. You can design a room or an entire house, the choice is completely yours. Not only that, but using the interior design program is fun too. So if you like decorating and you’re thinking of doing it for a living, or even if you’d just like to do it as a hobby, an interior design program will give you what you need to get started.

If you’re not sure which interior design program to use, try to find some product reviews of the several titles currently available. Or, you can ask an actual interior designer if they recommend any titles. Most of them are fairly similar and will give you everything you need to get started so pick one up and start decorating today. You’ll be glad you did and you’ll be amazed at what you come up with when you begin to decorate your first room. You never know, you could awaken a skill you never knew you had just by working with your very first interior design program.

interior design portfolio

Importance of an Interior Design Portfolio

An interior design portfolio is perhaps the most important tool to a student or even professional seeking interior design work. The portfolio is like an illustrative resume and is a representation of years of studying and hard work. This interior design portfolio is the only really that will help you get the job you want as no employer is going to hire someone blindly. They want to see real world examples of your interior design style as well as what you are capable of doing.

Contents of this Illustrative Resume

Whatever you do, do not overload your interior design portfolio as potential employers are busy and do not have the time to wade through pages and pages of examples of your work. Instead, stick with several projects you have worked on from start to finish, illustrating the process. Use digital photos of the work as well as floor plans and detailed sketches as you feel they are pertinent.

No more than thirty pages should be included in your interior design portfolio and in addition to the above items you will also want to include any CADD examples, isometric drawings and more so that the potential employer has a true grasp of all of your design abilities.

Tailor your project examples to the type of job you are applying for so they would have an idea of what you could do for them. Unless the employer is a design firm which handles a variety of clients whose styles vary widely, you would definitely be best represented by one or two complementary styles in your interior design portfolio that reflects the firm’s overall theme.

Confidence is Key

Do not waffle in what you want to put into the interior design portfolio as indecision will hold you back. Choose the best representations of your work, the things that you are most proud of and that pride in your work will shine through to the employer. Most of the time, you have but one chance to wow a potential employer with your interior design portfolio so you have to make the best of it.

When you interview, be prepared to discuss your work and why you did some projects a certain way over another. They are not necessarily questioning the end product but your methodology and basic work principles. As long as you are confident in your abilities and that confidence shines through in your portfolio, you should perform well in any interview.

interior design ideas

Where to Get Great Interior Design Ideas

When it comes to great interior design ideas people always think they need to pay some very strangely dressed old man a lot of money to give them their ideas. Nothing could be further from the truth as great interior design ideas are all around you. All you have to do is take the time to figure out how to incorporate your ideas into your home and also make sure everything looks coordinated.

Once you have done that, and you get good at introducing new interior design ideas into your home, then you have developed a valuable skill and maybe you could be that strangely dressed old man that people pay hundreds of dollars to for ideas.

Power of Observation

Always keep your eyes and mind open when you are out as that is where the professionals get all of their great interior design ideas. If you have ever really listened to a highly paid professional interior designer they will always tell you how they were in this place and saw this great idea and want to use it in your home. Do your own looking around and you will be surprised at what you find.

Interior design ideas are all around you and when you see something that really catches your eye then take a couple of minutes to study it and figure out if you want to use the idea in your house. If you see a unique interior design idea in a restaurant you are eating in then take a few minutes to really see how they created their design and you may be surprised at how simple some of the most beautiful designs start out.

Inspiration from Nature

Great interior design ideas can even be found in nature if you just take the time to look around you. Haven’t you ever looked at a tree in autumn and thought that it was so beautiful? Maybe you want something like that in your home. You never know until you open your mind and let the interior design ideas flow. When you are in the brainstorming phase nothing is too crazy as long as you don’t start experimenting on parts of your home. Make sure you do all of your thinking in controlled areas that you can experiment with but not have to live with for the next 30 years. Even the professionals practice before they implement.

So keep your eyes and mind open and you will find a ton of great interior design ideas all around you. You do not always need an expensive designer when you can do it yourself. All you need is a little time, a lot of imagination, and even more curiosity. Just try and picture how that would look in your house and go from there.

interior design firms

Criteria for Choosing Interior Design Firms

Interior design is a tough field to break in to because everyone is convinced that they do not need someone else to tell them how to rearrange the interior of their home or office. But interior design firms offer some pretty valuable services that if you are planning a large interior design job you cannot do without.

However, everyone needs to have their comfort level before they are going to hire any interior design firms and that is why you should develop a criterion for choosing an interior design firm that is based on things that are important to you and will make you feel comfortable as you develop a working relationship with them. Some of the criteria are pretty obvious but it is important to be totally comfortable with any interior design firm you may choose and any good interior design firm will understand that everyone has their own selection criteria.

Your first criterion for choosing any interior design firm is experience. Anyone can put an ad in the paper and say they do interior design but what experience do they have? It is true that everyone starts somewhere but before an interior design firm goes around charging for their services there are ways they can develop a track record that should be sufficient to satisfy anyone. Check the educational background and portfolios of the firm and if their educational background seems weak then that is when having real job experience becomes so very important. Make sure you get a firm that knows what they are doing. That is not asking too much when your money is involved.

Ask Question

In your selection process for an interior design firm, it is not unreasonable to ask questions and see how unique and creative their ideas are. You are hiring them because you want them to use their expertise to create things that you would either have never thought of or would have no idea how to create. If the interior design firm has no better ideas than you do then what is the point in hiring them? It is not asking too much to have them be more creative than you especially if you are hiring them for their ideas.

Selecting an interior design firm for your project is important because they are going to help you do things you would not normally be able to do yourself. It is your money so be picky and make sure you get a firm that you are completely comfortable with.

interior design courses

How to Pick an Interior Design Course

If you are interested in design there are many great interior design courses that can be taken over the internet, through the mail, or at your local college or university. Picking the right interior design course for you may be tricky, though. These tips will help you sort out the facts to find the best courses for you.

Accreditation

The first step to finding a good interior design course is to check to make sure the courses you are interested in are federally accredited by well known schools. This is important to not only the quality of the course, but it also makes getting grants and loans for the course easier. In fact, many grants and loans, such as a Pell Grant, will not even consider applications that are not for accredited schools.

How do you find out if a course is accredited? Contact the financial aid office of the school or speak with a representative directly. They will be able to tell you if the school is accredited and what the school’s loan and grant codes are. If the school acts like it doesn’t know what you are talking about pass them by for a better school.

The Benefits of Alternative Learning

When most people think of going back to school for interior design courses they think of going to a brick and mortar type of school. Today, there are many options for those that want flexible class schedules or that wants to learn from home. There are many interior design courses that are offered through the mail or through the internet. Most of these let you study at your own pace and at your own hours. This flexible learning style is great for those with full-time jobs, small children, or sick relatives that need constant care. The student is able to study and complete work whenever they find a few spare minuets. These types of courses are also great for older people who do not want to share a class with people fresh out of high school.

Course Material

Before signing any paper work, get as much information as you can about what the course will cover, if some of the learning will be hands-on or if it will all be book learning, and ask about what kind of assignments are typical. Much of this information should be readily available to students, but if you are having troubling finding answers, see if you can talk with one of the teachers. Most teachers are more than happy to talk with potential interior design course students.

interior design colors

How to Choose Interior Design Colors for Walls

Choosing the right interior design colors for your walls can make all the difference to a room. But how exactly do you go about it? Here are some ideas to picking the perfect interior design colors for you, your family, and your room.

Family and Roommates

Including everyone who lives in the space is important when choosing interior design colors for the walls. Wall color is a big deal, and compromises will probably have to be made. Start the decision process by making a list of all the colors that the room’s inhabitants like. See if there are any similarities, or if there are any colors that may look good together. If one color cannot be chosen, then maybe the room can be painted in two complimentary colors. For example, the moldings in the room could be painted the bolder of the two colors and the main wall could be painted the more subdued color. Another idea would be to paint the room in stripes of the chosen colors. The ceiling could also be painted the lighter color and the walls could be painted the darker color. (Painting the ceiling a dark color can make the room look top-heavy.) To see if the colors are complementary, see if the paint chips are next to each other in the paint store, or just use your own eye. If you like the combination, then go for it.

The Rest of the Room

You should also choose colors that work with the rest of the room. You can choose colors that go well with the sofa, for instance, or take colors from the rug. You may want to choose an interior design colors for the walls that contrasts with the others colors in the room for a punch of drama. If you are afraid of too much color, only paint one wall the color you chose. Make sure the wall you paint is the focal point in the room.

How Color Effects Size

When choosing interior design colors for a room’s walls it is important to remember how color will affect the size of the room. Dark colors seem to make the size of a room smaller. Light colors, on the others hand, brighten a room and make it seem more spacious. A lighter ceiling, as noted above, can make a low ceiling look higher, where a dark color will make it seem even lower.
Choosing an interior design color for walls can be daunting, but after thinking it through, you can chose a color that everyone can be happy with.

interior design bedroom

Options for Interior Design in the Bedroom

Your bedroom is a very multi-purpose room that can be difficult to change around once you get comfortable with it. One of the primary purposes of your bedroom is sleeping and once you get comfortable with the set up you have any changes you make will potentially affect your sleep patterns which can branch out to other parts of your day.

Any interior design in the bedroom projects should be well thought out prior to doing them as even something as simple as moving the bed can potentially cause many sleepless nights and problems down the road. So when you decide it is time for interior design in the bedroom be sure to take the time to plan it out and maybe even plan on doing it in stages so that there is no abrupt change all at once.

A bedroom can be like a bathroom in that interior design in the bedroom can be as simple as changing the look of what is already in the room. For a bathroom you can get a new shower curtain, some new window curtains, and maybe some things to dress up the toilet and your room looks totally different. The same thing can be done with a bedroom; a new set of bed sheets, a new comforter, and maybe some new drapes and you have the makings of a new looking room. Obviously a change in sheets is not a complete interior design in the bedroom but it can certainly make an impact and make the room begin to look different without changing a lot or spending a lot of money.

Careful with That Paint

When you begin to plan out your interior design in the bedroom you may want to throw a new color of paint on the wall or even put a design on your wall with wallpaper. This is always a great idea but remember that this is your bedroom and you will probably be spending more time in this room than any other room in the house. You should really give bright colors another thought as bright colors, and bright wallpaper patterns, in the bedroom are very difficult to live with.

Many paint companies have complete lines of paint shades and colors for the bedroom and the same goes for the wallpaper companies. Take a look at their color suggestions for your bedroom before you start painting. It can be difficult to sleep in a bright yellow room or even a blood red room. Actually a blood red room may give you nightmares so make sure you plan it all out carefully.

An interior design in the bedroom project is a great way to make you feel like you are making an impact in your home as you spend a great deal of your time in your bedroom. Just be certain that the changes you make in your bedroom are really changes you can live with.

interior design bathrooms

Interior Design For Bathrooms

Decorating your bathroom sounds easy enough. You have your toilet, your tub, a countertop, a sink and you’re done, right? Wrong. Decorating a bathroom is harder than it looks if you actually care about interior design. Interior design for bathrooms involves much more than just where to put your toilet and tub. You have colors to think about and textures, you have the number of sinks you want and more. So if you’re looking to make over your bathroom, you should either look at books and magazines, talk to someone who is an interior designer or maybe even hire one specifically for your bathroom interior design.

Magazines And Books

One great way to learn interior design for your bathroom is to look at magazines and books dedicated to this art. You can see how other people have set up their bathrooms, learn some tricks of the trade and you’ll definitely learn a thing or two regarding how, and how not, to set up a bathroom. The magazines have great pictures you can learn from and the books have how to instructions and much more.

Talk To An Interior Designer

If you really want to know how to interior design your bathroom, talk to someone who does it for a living. They may charge a fee for the consultation but you’ll undoubtedly get great advice. You’ll be able to see how much everything will cost, what recommendations they have and even what limitations you have depending on size and other factors. Getting a professional opinion is the perfect way to learn how to interior decorate your bathroom.

Hire A Designer

Finally, you can’t go wrong by hiring someone to do the work for you. You’ll have to pay a little more but at least you’ll be satisfied with the result. The person obviously knows what they’re doing and you’ll be able to hold them to their contract in case you’re not satisfied. This may be the way to go unless you know a little bit about interior designing your bathroom, as it really is harder than it looks.

So you now have several ways in which to interior design your bathroom. Just remember that no matter which way you choose, you always have a say so in the final decorating decisions. It is your bathroom after all and it should look the way you want it to. So have fun with it and remember that you have to look at it for as long as you own your home so you should be happy with the final result.

interior design art

Things You Can Tell From Interior Design Art

There is an old saying that says that there is no accounting for taste when it comes to art. There is another old saying that says that I may not know art but I know what I like. Interior design art is probably one of the strongest statement makers you can use in your home or office. It can set a mood, it can terrify people, or it can give people a glimpse into your own personal preferences.

Any kind of interior design art is someone’s personal expression whether it is a home owner or the architect of a high rise building. Somewhere along the line someone is showing their personality with an expression of interior design art and that is why it is so important to make sure that you choose the right interior design art for your project or home.

When we talk about interior design art we are talking about anything ranging from the painting over your sofa to the priceless statue that sits in the lobby of an impressive office building. The expression of interior design art should match the function of the building that it is in. If it is your home then it should be a personal expression of your own personality, your art preference, or your own personal piece of pop culture.

Even your Star Wars movie poster can be considered interior design art depending on where you display it and how you use it in relation to the rest of your house. Placement is critical; for instance in a professional office building it may be inappropriate to hang nude paintings on the wall or have a graphically nude statue in the lobby.

Using Art for Many Purposes

The concept of interior design art can be used for many purposes aside from decoration. You will notice that the interior design art found in many doctor’s waiting rooms and examination rooms is usually of a light hearted nature. Going to the doctor is stressful enough and they try and offset that with some images that may help you handle being at the doctor’s office a little better. Corporate waiting rooms will sometimes employ the same concept. They may put a series of positive and uplifting pieces of interior design art in their corporate waiting room to help the person waiting to stay positive.

There are so many messages and ideas you can convey with the art you choose to use in either your home or office. Be sure you tailor your choices to their intended use because sometimes inappropriate art can send the wrong message too.

interior design

Interior Design on a Budget

It is always a lot of fun, and sometimes quite rewarding, to look around your house and make some changes to the interior design. When you start to get involved in interior design many people neglect to do a lot of planning. They look at their home, picture this or that here or there, then start buying supplies and begin hammering.

The process of interior design requires a great deal of planning and just because you watch experienced professionals do it in a one hour television show doesn’t mean that you can do it that way as well. Poorly executed interior design can cost two or three times as much to fix, and if you do not plan your interior design right, and it turns out all wrong, it can be a very discouraging thing.

But interior design doesn’t need to cost a fortune, especially if you plan it well, and there are a lot of ways to do interior design on a shoestring budget.

The first tip is that even the smallest changes can make the biggest impact. If you have been staring at your living room for months trying to figure out how to make it look bigger then try simple things before you plan out any major changes. Move the furniture around. Sometimes furniture in a different place can make a room look huge. You can also try strategically placed mirrors on the wall. Use decorative mirrors and develop a way to put them on the wall without hammering a lot of holes in the wall for nails and such. Try curtains that allow more light and experiment with other such small changes in interior design that can make a huge impact.

A Coat of Paint and Some Throw Pillows

Sometimes the most cliché things wind up being so very true. A coat of paint makes all the difference in the world and a gallon of good paint is not that expensive. If you have a few extra dollars you could even get the easy cleaning kind of paint that would make your life so much easier in the future. Go to your local paint retailer and get color samples to see what colors you want in your interior design project.

Remember that you should never experiment with your walls, always map it out with samples first. Always let your mind go when it comes to a coat of paint and just explore all the possibilities because you never know what may look good without checking it out first. Always plan on putting up at least two coats no matter how complete the first coat may look. Being lazy is not going to make for a good interior design project.

When you decide to try any interior design project do not be intimidated by the thought of doing such a project. If you take your time and carefully map everything out then you will find that more and more ideas start popping into your head. After a while a project like this starts to gain momentum and pretty soon you will be glad you decided to do it.

house interior design

Some Inexpensive Tips for House Interior Design

Everyone wants to change their house interior design but everyone also wants to save a few dollars in the process. There are many ways you can change your house interior design, or improve it, that are simple to do and very low cost. A couple of these ideas are even free.

Once you start reading these house interior design tips, you will start to look around your home and see a ton of ideas that never occurred to you before. Be careful though because once you get started with house interior designs and remodeling you can have a hard time stopping yourself. But if it is almost free or very low cost, then what can the harm be?

A Towel and Some Water

Believe it or not, the first house interior design tip is cleaning. Designers have been in a hundred homes where the owners complain that they want to change the look of their dreary home and all the while the experts are running their fingers through a quarter inch of dust on top of the television. Move some furniture, break out the polish and the glass cleaner, lift a lamp cord and just clean your house. It seems like the most basic of house interior design ideas, however a deep down cleaning of your home will look like a new coat of paint if you maintain that clean at least once a month.

Is That a Picture or a Window?

Hit some garage sales or some flea markets and pick up some artistic pictures for your walls. You would be shocked at the difference they make and it does not take many to give a room a breath of fresh air. Maybe a decorative candle holder here or there or framed pictures of your family can make all the difference in the world.

A Coat of Paint

It is the oldest saying in house interior design but a coat of paint makes all the difference in the world. Dingy and beaten up walls can make your room look dark and gloomy and a coat of bright paint dresses that up and makes it shine again. Once again, it seems too easy and may sound insignificant but a coat of paint does wonders for a home at a very reasonable cost. Add some pizzazz by using a textured paint or creating a faux finish. Home improvement stores host how-to clinics where you can learn how to use sponges and rags to create accent walls to really brighten up your home.

home interior design

Some Things to Avoid In Home Interior Design

Everyone likes to save money and some people try to save money by doing it themselves when it comes to home interior design. There is nothing wrong with doing it yourself and there is even a great sense of satisfaction when the job is done and it looks and works great.

But even in do-it-yourself home interior design there are still a lot of things you should either avoid or get a professional to help you with. After all this is your home we are talking about and while home interior design can be fun and rewarding it can also be catastrophic if done incorrectly. You certainly do not want your home interior design project burning your house down so be smart and follow some basic rules of home interior design.

The old phrase “what harm can it do?” is a great indicator that you should not attempt something. If you look at something and you have no idea how to do it then the worst way to try and figure it out is by just diving into it. There are instructional DVDs for many do-it-yourself home projects and informative books as well. Use them as resources for the things you are unsure about and become sure before you give them a try.

If the project requires electrical or plumbing work, and you have no idea how to do either, then get a professional. Electrical and plumbing work can not only cause serious physical damage to you if you don’t know what you are doing but they can also cause a lot of damage to your home. Be smart with this part of home interior design - put the ego aside, and call a professional.

Load Bearing

Before you put that sledgehammer to that wall to make more room in your kitchen you need to ask yourself a question. Do you feel lucky? Do you know for a fact that the wall you are about to remove is not a load bearing wall that will cause parts of the house to collapse if it is removed? Part of home interior design is knowing where the important walls are and a load bearing wall is about as important as it gets. If you are not 100 per cent sure about a wall’s load bearing status then get a professional in to take a look before you swing that sledgehammer; you won’t regret it.

Another thing about that wall you are going to take out, do you know what electrical and plumbing lines run through it? This is vital to know because if you start smacking a wall that has electrical or plumbing lines running through it then the chances are very high that you will be very sorry. You need to understand your own limitations when you engage in home interior design and if you can accept the things you don’t know then everything else runs smoother. So check your ego at the door and remember that this is your home we are talking about and if you go around bashing load bearing walls that are full of electrical and plumbing lines then you won’t have much of a home left to remodel. Insurance companies don’t cover damage due to careless home interior design so watch what you are doing and always make sure you are positive in the decisions you make before it’s too late.

home design software

Why You Should Use Home Design Software

When people start the process of designing their dream home there are certain things they like to leave to the professionals. For instance, many people avoid getting involved in the down and dirty part of home planning that gets involved with design work and blueprints.

But a lot of people don’t realize that there is plenty of home design software available that can not only help you lay out your dream home but also give you a better understanding of how and why certain things can be done and certain things cannot be done. There are many levels of home design software available and you do not need the most complicated home design software on the market to get your point across and learn the things you need to learn when designing your dream home.

Understanding Walls

The first thing that any good home design software will teach you is how to place walls in a home so that the home does not collapse. Load bearing walls and wall dimensions are important in building a home and while it may all seem easy you learn quickly that it is not that easy when you start using your home design software. But that is what home design software is for, you use it to learn how to build your home and you can also use it to see how to overcome certain design obstacles that are going to come up from time to time.

Perhaps the angle of a particular wall is just not physically possible or that one design feature you saw on a house you walked through last week is more complicated than you thought. Using a good home design software program can not only give you a much better feel for the work that goes into planning a home build but also an appreciation for how the different elements of a home work together.

It’s On the Outside Looking In

A home doesn’t sit on a cloud; homes are built on solid ground. In order to make sure that the rain and the elements do not erode your house into a pile of rubble you need to understand how water tables affect the building of a foundation and how properly grading your lawn is so very important. These are all things a good piece of home design software will teach you and help you understand. Most people do not understand the concept of designing the outside of the house so that the water from the rain runs away from the house and not towards it. This is a very important element of home building and home design software will teach you that.

There is so much to learn about building a home and you can learn a lot of it from using a good piece of home design software. Plan your own home and then ask the professionals how good your design is. If you take the time to learn everything the software is trying to teach you then you will be surprised at how much you know about your new home.

home design

The Joys of Home Design

Everyone dreams about owning the perfect home and more and more people are realizing that dream by building their own home or at least helping to design their home even if a contractor is building it for them.

Even if you know nothing about home design you can still be an active participant in the creation of your dream home by giving the people that do the real home design something to work with. A home design team is only as good as the idea they are given and you will be the people they look to for their home design direction because it is your home. So it is one thing to say you are excited about your dream home but a whole other ball game to actually know what you want and to know exactly how you want it laid out. So take some time to get ready to contribute to your own home design.

Open Houses

The first thing you can do in your dream home development is get out and see what other homes look like. People all over the country spend beautiful weekend afternoons just driving around town and looking at the sights. On top of seeing things you may have never seen before you also get to get some very good real life ideas for your home design project.

If you get out on a Sunday afternoon you may be able to walk through some open houses being held by various real estate agents and this can be a great way to get some real life ideas for your home design project.

Magazines and Stores

For some reason many people think it is silly to start looking through these perfect living magazines to get ideas for their home design project when that is exactly what those magazines were created for in the first place. Spend some time with Martha Stewart or spend some time checking out the better homes and gardens of our country to give you ideas on what your dream home will look like.

Remember this is your dream, your money, and the place you will be living so you will want to make sure everything is just as you want it. You can also spend time at the local home improvement super stores to see what the different components of a home look like and incorporate them into your dream home.

There are giveaways every year by big companies that promise people the chance to win their dream home. That has never made sense because how does someone else know what your dream home looks like? Plan your own dream home out and make sure it looks exactly like you want it to and has everything you have ever dreamed of having in a home.

french interior design

French Interior Design: You Don’t Have To Move To France

If you want to learn French interior design, you don’t need to move to Paris. Yes, that might help but it’s not necessary. You can learn French interior design techniques in a variety of ways. You can take a class, you can intern with a designer, or you can learn on your own by reading magazines and books. French interior design is very popular so if you want to become an interior design, you should be well versed in all techniques and that includes techniques in French interior design.

Take A Class

The best way to learn French interior design is to take a class taught by someone who knows all about French design. If you learn from a knowledgeable instructor, you’ll have the ability to ask questions if you don’t understand. You’ll be given assignments and tests until those techniques are firmly implanted in your brain. Not only that but you’ll have the certification, once completed, that proves you know your stuff. French interior design classes are held everywhere so you should have no problem finding a class in your area.

Intern

Another great way to learn French interior design is to intern with an established designer that practices French techniques. You’ll learn the ins and outs of the business, and how to decorate a room or house the French way, and you’ll be able to absorb everything you’re taught. The only downside to interning as opposed to taking a class is that you might not learn all the French interior design techniques, only the ones that particular designer uses.

Magazines and Books

Of course you can also learn on your own by reading magazines and books that feature French interior design techniques. You can get great ideas just from looking at the pictures featured in the magazines and there should be quite a few books out there with how to instructions regarding French interior design. This may also be limited, as opposed to taking a class, but it will definitely give you plenty of ideas and can give you a good foundation to work off of.

When you finally do learn French interior design, your services will be much sought after as many people love the way the French decorate. You should get lots of business and soon you might be able to take an intern so that you can show them the ropes of French design, or you could maybe teach a class so that others might learn this beautiful form of decorating.

exterior home design

Two Types of Exterior Home Design

As you look at the outside of your home you start to run through a lot of exterior home design ideas in your head. Some of those exterior home design ideas need to be headed off at the pass and stopped right away. Lawn jockeys went out of style years ago so don’t even think about it.

There are two stages of exterior home design that you need to think of when you are considering projects as you stare at the outside of your home. The first is necessary projects that have to be done mostly due to needed repair or regular home maintenance. The other is the projects that you would love to do if you have time and can fit them into your budget. Obviously the more important exterior home design projects are the ones that have to be done due to repair or regular maintenance but they do not need to be boring.

Window Sills

If your window sills need work, then take that as an opportunity to spice up the trim on your house. Decide on a color that matches with the current color of your house and get to painting. This is also a great time to repair and reinforce any window sills that may have eroded over time and, due to neglect, are now looking like they are falling apart.

It is not uncommon to one day look up at the window sills at the top floors of your home, especially in the back, and realize that it has been years since you did anything to help them out. Window sills in need of repair can be places where warm air gets out and cold air and water gets in to cause damage. So this kind of exterior home design project is not only necessary for cosmetic reasons but it is also very necessary for the efficiency of your home and to prevent future damage.

Lawn

When people start considering exterior home design projects they always think about painting the house, adding some siding, or even getting the roof repaired or replaced. But what about your lawn? Landscaping is also part of exterior home design and you can use landscaping to really make your house stand out. Real estate agents call it curb appeal and it means that people looking at your house from the curb will find it attractive if you just add things here and there to your lawn.

Colorful flowers in the right spot are always attractive. You may not need a whole garden but some color is always nice. Some sort of border around the sidewalk leading up to your house can also add a nice touch. Anything that is not over the top but still adds something to your home’s curb appeal is great.

If you really want to start planning a exterior home design project then make sure you get the important stuff done first and make sure that you add value to your home while you are doing it. There are a lot of great ideas if you just keep your eyes and mind open.

egyptian interior design

The Popular Egyptian Interior Design

It is amazing the wide varieties that are available for us to pick from when it comes to interior design. You can go with a modern look, a country look, a Victorian look, or an antique look. But most people do not think about egyptian interior design as a décor that many people would be seeking. As time has shown though, the interest in the Egyptian culture has led many people to research and study the Egyptian life with much more intensity.

The peaked interest in this culture has brought many people to wanting the look and feel of Egyptian times with the use of egyptian interior design. There are many ways to go about getting the feel of being right there in Egypt. Some people choose to go all out and have every room in their home, including the bathroom, to have a little or a lot of the egyptian interior design. While others simply pick a room out of the home and focus all the design energy into that one area. The single room that often times is hand picked for this design would be that of the bedroom and then secondly the office or study.

The egyptian interior design is not only selected by homeowners but by business owners as well. Some companies have different themed party rooms that must be decorated in a manner to match the theme. While some restaurants cater to giving their customers the ultimate Egyptian experience in hopes that this unique dining will make for repeat business and word of mouth advertisement which is important for the success of a business.

Why Egyptian Interior Design

This type of design is often used for many different reasons. Many of the pieces used in designing an Egyptian themed room are of high value or mirror what a true Egyptian artifact would look like. These items are often very detailed oriented and offer the visitor a wide spectrum of things to look over. This design peaks the interest of many and gets them involved more with their surroundings.

High quality egyptian interior design is able to set the mood of the entire room or space that it occupies. It is not unusual to see people using varied decorating interior design ideas for different rooms and even have other members of the family do their own rooms based on individual decorating and interior design ideas.

Men and Design

Every husband should get at least one room in the house where he can implement his own decorating interior design ideas regardless of how tacky the wife thinks those ideas are. It’s only fair; after all, men take out the garbage. So letting men have one lousy room in the house for their decorating interior design ideas should not be asking for too much.

Some themes are more difficult than others to implement. Many people find a Colonial American theme to be desirable but if it is only done in one room of the house then it just does not look right. Usually the decorating interior design of the entire home should try and remain consistent and many people accomplish this by deciding on a theme for the entire home and going with that.

The only real exception to this would be garages and basements. For some reason you could have almost any kind of theme you want in the garage or your finished basement and it would look just fine and not make the rest of the house look like it doesn’t belong together. That is usually why the garage or the finished basement is where most men are allowed to practice their decorating interior design skills. Any room where the door can just be closed and forgotten about is usually reserved for the man of the house!

Floor to Floor

Some of the more creative decorating interior design ideas include differing themes from floor to floor as opposed to one overall theme for the entire house. The children’s rooms are allowed to be customized by the children while the wife will surely attend to the master bedroom. It is usually the downstairs of the home, the main floor, that receives the consistent theme from room to room and the personal rooms assigned to each person of the house are usually customized by the person that occupies that room.

So take some time and plan a consistent theme for your home and then start to map out your decorating interior design ideas so that they are creative and make your home interesting not only to you but also to your guests.

contemporary interior design

Learning Contemporary Interior Design Techniques

You want to get started in interior design but you’re not sure if you have what it takes. But there are so many different sides to commercial interior design that it can be difficult to choose which direction to go in when you do decide that commercial interior design is for you. Remember that there are some basics that every commercial interior design professional has to know and no matter what you do you will be faced with some of the same challenges in every project.

One of the most crucial tools in commercial interior design is computer software. It is commonly referred to as Computer Aided Design, or CAD, and it is the tool that all commercial interior design people use to create their ideas and put them into a format that eventually gets into the general contractor’s hands. The CAD program can create all manner of blueprints and design drawings that help get a project off the ground and without an expert working knowledge of CAD you are simply not going to be able to be effective in the commercial interior design field.

So much has changed in architecture and design in the last 50 years and now computers have taken away the need to be able to even draw to get your point across. If you learn how to manipulate the CAD software then you will be able to get your design ideas across.

Engineering

A career in design is a career in engineering too and your engineering skills may be put to different tests on every project. You need to be able to work out the relationship between the space available on an office floor and the need for cubicles along with how to add more space to a building that doesn’t have it. So much of commercial interior design is about moving and economizing space and that does not always mean working with existing space. There will be times when you are called on to create space and that can require skills in engineering.

The field of commercial interior design can be a challenging one as it requires knowledge from a variety of disciplines in order to be successful. Be prepared for a lot of studying - but once you are done you can look forward to a rewarding career.

colleges for interior design

Do You Need To Attend A College For Interior Design?

If you want to become an interior designer, there are several ways you can go about it. One of those is to attend a college for interior design. However, do you have to attend a college if you want to be an interior designer? Couldn’t you just wing it, as long as you have great ideas? The answer is: maybe. Sure, if you have the vision and the talent, you might be able to get by without attending a college for interior design. However, if you’re looking to become employed as an interior designer, many employers may require that degree. Also, you’ll be sure to learn the latest tips and tricks of the trade at a college for interior design, and you’ll also be able to network and make contacts with the best people in the business.

Vision and Talent

If you have great vision and talent, you may be able to get by without attending a college for interior design. You’ll have solid proof that you know all about interior design. You’ll learn the latest techniques, the newest looks and you’ll learn how to transform any room in a house into a work of art. By getting assignments and being tested on these techniques, this will solidify your education and you’ll hopefully be much, much better than when you first enrolled in the college for interior design.

So whether you’re just a mediocre interior designer, you’re just starting out, or even an expert, a college for interior design could be exactly what you need to be the best. In Medieval times a church would sometimes get ransacked just for its stained glass windows as these windows were seen as valuable treasure at the time. Of course today stained glass windows are still an important part of church interior design but they are hardly considered treasure anymore even though stained glass windows can get very expensive.

One of the staples of church interior design is something referred to as the Stations of the Cross. If you go to a Christian church you will notice along the walls many pictures that seem to be telling a story and inevitably you will notice that one of the pictures is Jesus carrying his cross and then another of the pictures is Jesus on the cross. These pictures are done in a particular order and must display, in one way or another, each of the Stations of the Cross as outlined by the Church.

There are 14 Stations of the Cross and their image is based on simple titles as supplied by the Church. For example, stage one is titled “Jesus is condemned to death” and that image will somehow show the Romans condemning Jesus to death. These Stations of the Cross are either in the form of the stained glass windows that line the church or, more often than not, elaborate plaques that hang on the wall. All of this is a staple of church interior design.

The Bread and the Wine

Another staple of church interior design is an altar and this is usually made out of marble. Other churches have their altars made out of wood but the majority of Christian church altars are marble. You cannot have a church without an altar so it can be said that this is one of the critical pieces of church interior design. Another critical piece of church interior design that no church can be without is the tabernacle. The tabernacle holds the bread and wine for communion. Some tabernacles are very elaborate while others are simple boxes; regardless of the design the tabernacle will usually sit behind, or next to, the altar.

The other main and important piece of church interior design is the seats themselves commonly referred to as pews. A pew is a long bench that will have a padded place to kneel at the foot of it. Churches do not normally have individual seating as the pew has been standard seating in churches for centuries.

best interior design schools

Competition Can Be Fierce in the Best Interior Design Schools

There are over 130 schools and colleges in North America that deal specifically with interior design and they are accredited by the Foundation for Interior Design Education Research which sets the standards for policy as well as curriculum. They all have a tough application process which is par for the course in the best interior design schools. Of course, there are even more schools out there for interior design but they do not have the accreditation.

Getting Educated

Some students are quite surprised after being accepted into one of the best interior design schools that the courses are not all about manipulating space and adding finishing touches to a room, which is what interior decorating is. Rather, interior design encompasses the ground floor and up such as where stairs should go as well as adjoining walls and other architectural elements which could influences a space.

The best interior design schools are not just going to focus on the immediate skills needed to perform a job. They will have a wide variety of required courses that will help prepare you for dealing with the business world like business ethics, marketing, drafting and more. These schools are similar to regular four-year colleges in that you will take pre-requisite courses like drawing and color theory before you can take the core classes in your favored concentration.

Popularity of the Path

The best interior design schools are getting more and more applications each year for entry into their programs which is why the field is so competitive. There are hundreds of students applying for one slot in a program that may be limited in size due to limited staff as well as limited space. Well listen here my friend and I will impart unto you the knowledge you will need to turn your bedroom into your lair of love with some very simple bedroom interior design tips.

That special lady in your life will think she is with a totally new man and these bedroom interior design tips are sure to put that sparkle back into her eye. Always be careful when you implement these bedroom interior design ideas because you don’t want to hurt yourself and miss out on taking advantage of your new lair of love.

The first step in your new bedroom interior design is the obligatory mirror on the ceiling. It is best to do the mirror on the ceiling in sections because anything too big can crack while you are putting it up and that would be dangerous. If you have any hesitations on installing a mirror ceiling then get some one that knows how to install a mirrored ceiling. It may cost a little to do it but the mirrored ceiling is a staple of any bedroom interior design project that is destined to be a lair of love.

Don’t Forget the Curtains

No lair of love is complete without some very thick and sexy curtains for keeping the light out and the love in. Be sure to install reinforced curtain rods to support your thicker curtains as the weight of the thicker curtains can cause your standard curtain rod mount to collapse. But once you get that reinforced curtain rod up, and you hang your thick red velour curtains, then it is time to let your special lady know that your lair of love is almost done.

Dark gold tassels are always a nice addition to red velour curtains as the dark gold color against the red is a nice contrast in the light and also creates a stunning effect in the low light.

There is no lair of love without a mood and the mood is set with a quality stereo system and the right mood lighting. Installing dimmers in place of your light switch will allow you to lower the light in the room to any level you like. A stereo that accommodates four speakers is always best to get sound to circulate throughout the entire room and if you can afford a receiver with 5.1 Dolby surround then you can take advantage of the new techniques in CD mixing.

You can add your own velvet black light posters and fully stocked bar as you see fit. Just don’t skimp on the details; it will pay off handsomely.

asian interior design

Really Getting the Feel for Asian Interior Design

Many people think that Asian interior design means throwing up a few Oriental language symbols on the walls and a gong and you are done. However, there is a great deal of ingenuity that goes into Asian interior design that was derived from centuries of experimentation.

The Asian cultures are very good at taking what has been learned over the years and constantly adapting and modifying it to become part of contemporary design methods. It is not unusual to see Asian interior design in the United States but if all you are looking at is a Chinese restaurant then you really are not seeing true Asian interior design at work. Real Asian interior design is very different and something most Western cultures have not really experienced but unknowingly deal with every day.

Perspective

In Asian interior design, the concept of perspective is very important. If you have ever walked around a true Asian building you will notice that the idea of setting off a space by either lowering that space or raising the other space around it is being employed. In Asian interior design this is to give the notion of perspective and to help a room seem much bigger than it really is.

Many Western cultures use mirrors to achieve the same effect while the Asian cultures prefer to use a room forced perspective. With the advances in technology today that make enhancing a room size a little easier it is difficult to justify this sort of design technique but it can be effective if done properly.

Gold Dragons

Asian culture is famous for its dragons but this is another piece of Americanization at work. For Asian interior design it is not necessarily the picture of a dragon that symbolizes what they are trying to say but rather the idea of a mural telling a story. Dragons just happen to be a popular part of Asian culture that Western cultures picked up on but if you get into real Asian interior design you will see small scrolls made of bamboo with entire stories on them. This story telling with wall hangings has been going on for centuries and has survived into modern times.

Many of the aspects of Asian interior design are about allowing light to flow freely without the need for electric light or any other kind of artificial light. The way an Asian home is usually set up is a throw back to the days before electric light when the outside light needed to illuminate the entire house. It is not seen as much today but that notion of allowing outside light to flow freely is a very Asian concept.

Art That Is Art Deco Interior Design

The Art That Is Art Deco Interior Design

Although art deco interior design is often thought of as a design from the past, there was once a time where this was seen as a thing before its time and of extreme elegance. Between the years of 1920 and 1939, art deco interior design and architecture was at its most popular points in history. You could look just about anywhere and see this “ultra modern” design also being displayed in fashion, paintings, films, and in industrial design.

While a lot of different design movements have some sort of roots that lead back to some important political or even philosophical intentions, art deco interior design is not one of those movements. In fact, art deco interior design came about simply for decorative purposes with it’s popularity peaking in the roaring twenties.

While this is something that most people may already know, one fact that is not as widely known is where the term Art Deco comes from. It has been found that the term actually was derived from the year 1925 and its events, although the term was not actually coined until late in the 1960’s. And it was actually a book, by the man who coined the term that made it popular in 1968.

The End of Art Deco Popularity

It wasn’t until around World War II that art deco interior design and its popularity came to a temporary crashing halt. Once the West started mass producing art deco interior design items, people started to feel that it lost its appeal and that it no longer gave the image of luxury. This false image of luxury came about because everyone could have a part in art deco interior design. And if everyone can have it so easily, it is no longer luxurious.

There are currently offices and organizations that are working to improve and restore buildings from the Art Deco age as these are a part of our history in so many different ways. Many of these buildings are that of private homes, businesses, and hotels. There is also a lot of work being done to restore pieces of true art deco art, utensils, and furniture.

It is important to many people that the era of art deco interior design lives on into our lives now and in the future. While there have been many little rebirths of the art deco design and interest, there has never been a period so strong in the love of art deco as that of the 1920’s and 1930’s.

3d interior design

Experiment a New Home Look with 3D Interior Design

How would you like to totally redecorate your new home without having to buy any paint or materials to do it? With 3d interior design, you can experiment to your heart’s content playing with colors, textures and more without making a commitment. Done via a computer, you do not even have to leave the comfort of your home office chair or visit countless home improvement stores in order to come up with a design plan.

How It Works

There are several ways in which 3d interior design works and your commitment to re-decorating your home will determine which method you go for. First of all, there are a variety of free websites which offer 3d interior design based on a number of pre-made templates, designs, materials, textures and colors. You would choose the room template closest to what you are looking for with limited capability to place doors and windows where they need to be.

From there, you can play around with wall colors, wallpaper, rugs, furniture placement, lighting, fixtures and more. The free 3d interior design is for newcomers to decorating who are just seeking some sort of rough guidance before setting off on their own.

There are also 3d interior design companies online which have a subscription fee but you send them pictures of the rooms you are interested in redesigning. In turn, they will translate them into workable 3d images which you can then manipulate on your own. This is the optimal option as the images in this 3d interior design option will be right on with where windows are as well as doors, electrical outlets and even unique architectural elements such as cornice or bead boards and such.

Benefits

There are several major benefits to using a 3d interior design program when it comes to your redecorating aspirations. First of all, you are not spending hundreds to thousands of dollars purchasing materials, paint and furniture before deciding that it was not what you wanted after all. The 3d interior design factor ends up saving you a lot of money in the long run.

Another benefit to this 3d deal is that you can experiment for as long as you want, trying out different ideas as you run across them. If you and your partner have two opposing design styles, the 3d interior design software option allows you both to play around with color schemes, wallpaper, furniture placement, rugs, and more until you come up with a hybrid design that meshes both styles together into one you both enjoy. The beauty of the 3d interior design is that you have freedom to play and know that when all is said and done, the only thing you have lost is the time spent retooling designs.
